Constipation In Newborns

The initial stool of a young one that comes within the initial 24 hours after birth is known as meconium. It is mainly made up of substances that were consumed whilst in the mother’s womb. This stool is black, sticky and neutral. It is accompanied by a number of color variations. This is particularly the case with subsequent feces.

Usually, newborns need to poop once or twice a day the least bit. After the first 8 weeks, the newborn can poop after a number of days. Newly born babies can become really unhappy if they get constipated as this condition is very agonizing.

The newborns bowel movements are primarily dependent on the method of feeding the baby. Babies that are breast-fed seem to poop quite often. Constipation in newborns occurs when the young one doesn’t poop within a period of a week or more. And when they do, the resultant stool is quite hard.

This condition can be attributed to failure to consume foods satisfactorily; the kind of food or drinks that the baby is fed on; and simply failure of the newborn’s digesting system to easily get accustomed to the new environment outside the mother’s womb. Newborn constipation is treatable in case it is identified.

You can detect constipation in a newborn by continued trouble and strain. In truth, mumbling is not an indication of constipation. In most cases newborns mumble quite a lot. That is their way of communicating to the people around them. It also helps them to learn how to make use of sound.

Newborns can also grunt when their anal muscles extend, even though this doesn’t cause discomfort as the muscles should naturally extend. In case the stool is hard and dry, that shows that the newborn is already constipated. In addition, when the newborns bring the legs close to the chest region repeatedly, it shows that they are constipated. Their facial appearance may also change to reddish whenever they want to poop and this is another indication for constipation in newborns.

The first probable cause of newborn constipation is the change from breast feeding to other methods of feeding the baby. The digestive system of a baby is very responsive to any changes. For example, feeding the baby on formula avails extra iron content to their body in comparison with breast milk. Therefore, constipation is a side effect. After about four months, most babies can begin to consume cereals, a change that is also perceived by their digestive system and can result in constipation.

Soon after rice, babies can begin to take solid substances. Such solids may have reduced fiber content which can block the digestive system of the baby as well. Bananas and potatoes are some of the foods that are responsible for constipation in babies. Certainly, there are a number of other causes of constipation in babies.

Newborns need to make several adjustments during their initial years after birth. Expectantly, lessening constipation should not be very hard for them.
Treatments and their success differ from one newborn to the other. Attempting to feed the baby with new solid foods like peaches and prunes can help to manage and avoid constipation because they are rich in high fiber content.

A second recommendation is to combine a small amount of water to an equal amount of prune juice. Always be sure that you visit your health care provider before attempting to feed the baby with a combination of water and any other thing. This is because water may prove dangerous to babies. You can get further suggestions from your health care provider. In case the constipation problem persists, be sure to consult your family health care provider as well.
